NVIDIA TAKES A GEOPOLITICAL HIT

NVIDIA is the inventor of the GPU, which creates interactive graphics on laptops, workstations, mobile devices, notebooks, PCs, and more.

The company has revealed recently that it has been subject to new laws restricting the export of high-end GPUs to China and Russia.

The company expects that it could lose $400 million in quarterly potential sales in China. The new rule also applies to sales to Russia, though NVIDIA said it doesn’t have paying customers there.

As of writing, NVIDIA’s shares have been down 60.66% since the beginning of the year.

GPU products were originally developed to render images in video games but in the past decade have been widely deployed in supercomputers used by scientists and by internet companies for applications such as recognizing speech and objects in photographs.

Supercomputers are also used in applications that include weapons development and intelligence operations, and some large systems in China have been linked to advanced surveillance systems.

This is just one of many consequences resulting as the global geopolitical landscape continues to fracture.
