It seems stunning that a virus that originated in China and spread in part due to Chinese government mismanagement may reorder the world to Beijing’s advantage. Such things happen in geopolitics, sometimes spontaneously and sometimes deliberately.
As people around the world fall ill, global markets convulse, and supply chains collapse, COVID-19 could become a factor reshaping international politics.
China has shown to have an economical and political influence agenda and will take the crisis as an opportunity to start setting new rules according to its own global governance vision, displacing Washington from future ordering efforts. We may already see signs of this intention as China sells and donates medical supplies to countries worldwide and overstatingly markets itself as the world’s savior.
If the United States chooses not to pursue a role of leadership while China offers supplies and coordination, some international partners may naturally perceive China’s leadership to have strengthened, BUT will they lose sight of their systemic flaws? Will they really accept and embrace the CCP’s ways for a new world order? 🤔
